Joey Lulu’s Modern, Minimal Nursery!

We are so, so excited to finally be sharing the pictures of Joanna’s nursery!! This has been a labor of love for the better part of a year, between months of trying to decide what to do and then eventually putting it all together, which of course we did at the last possible minute before she was born…. and up until last weekend!

It all started with this AMAZING “Sunburst” wallpaper from Chasing Paper, designed by Jessica Jones. When I spotted it for the first time I instantly had to have it. Every random nursery idea we’d had up to that point was out the window. So we decided to go modern and minimal to allow the wallpaper to pop, and stick with a midcentury style that we love. The color palette of white, grey, gold with bits of blush and coral is light and fresh, a little bit girly, a little bit edgy, and makes sense with the rest of our house. (You can check out our original nursery moodboard and the story of hanging the peel-and-stick wallpaper.)

We painted the walls the same shade of white we painted the rest of the house, Sherwin-Williams “Snowbound” (color matched to Valspar Reserve so it’s no-VOC), and painted the ceiling the perfect shade of blush pink — with the most-perfect-ever name! — “Champagne Pink” by Valspar.

We were able to repurpose most of the furniture in the room from things we already owned — like the credenza-turned-changing table that used to be in the family room of our old house, the hopscotch rug that was in our entryway and is so perfect for a kid’s room, and the dresser that was in our old bedroom and that Andy’s grandpa built. You may remember the tissue paper flowers above the changing table from my baby shower. The AWESOME shark clock is new. We got it at our favorite store in Cincinnati.

Andy made the box to go around the changing pad that perfectly integrates it with the credenza, and I made the mobile above the crib out of natural-colored bass wood. We’ll be sharing more about both DIY projects in future posts.

One of our absolute favorite things we bought for the nursery is the fabulous brass light fixture by Sazerac Stitches. This room doesn’t have very high ceilings so we needed a flush mount … but you know how ugly those can be! So I was thrilled to find this one that has a low profile, stylish AND affordable.

I love rocking Joey to sleep every night in this rocking chair from Land of Nod. It’s the perfect size for a small room, is really comfy (even for those 2 a.m. feedings) and is exactly the style that we wanted. It’s something we’ll be able to have for years and can even move to different parts of the house without looking “baby.”

Personal touches really make a nursery, from handmade things like the sock monkey and blankets made by friends and family, to special gifts like the wood state blocks that represent the three states I consider home. This funny stuffed animal mole, Krtek, was a gift from Andy’s brother’s fiancee and is apparently a very popular cartoon character in Prague, where she’s from originally. Also, can we just take a minute to talk about PINK CONS FOR BABIES?! They won’t fit for a long time, but who cares because they’re the cutest thing ever.

We really wanted Joey’s room to have a little bit of edge and not be too super sweet and girly, so a band poster is just what she needed. This blue and pink one was a gift that I gave Andy a few years ago by artist Hellen Jo, based on fictional band Crash & the Boys from the Scott Pilgrim comic books. It’s special because we both really like the comics, and the drummer in the band is a girl. Since Andy is a drummer, maybe Joey will be, too!

Joey’s been sleeping in her own room since she turned one month old. She loves to look at the wallpaper and watch the mobile swing. Andy and I are so happy to be able to watch Joey grow up in a room that we put so much love and hard work into. It’s by far my favorite room we’ve ever designed — and the most finished! It was important to us to create a room that Joey can grow into, that doesn’t scream “baby” but is still baby appropriate, and that can easily change with her as she learns what she likes.

  1. Hey guys!
Joey’s room is beautiful!! It is really cool to see some of the stuff you guys received at the shower in there. Is that the blanket Jonalyn made? It looks beautiful.
Can’t wait to see her rocking her Pink Cons!!
That Scott Pilgrim poster is also pretty perfect.

    See you guys soon!

    1. Thanks, Jessica!! That is the blanket from Jonalyn on the rocking chair. Joey and I cuddle up in it almost every night to read books before bed. Love it.
